Example Activities

Becoming more aware of one’s breath helps relax the body and mind. It calms the chatter of thoughts so one can see life with more clarity. It is extremely effective in lowering stress and nervousness. Children learn that when they are upset, they can take a few moments to focus on their breath, settle down, relax and see a situation more clearly.
Focusing on body sensations helps bring children into the present moment, improving their attention skills. The Body Scan helps us notice our body and relax. It’s a great thing to do if you feel worried, anxious, or upset. It’s also helpful to do when you are having trouble sleeping at night. The Slow Motion’ game invites children to pay attention to tactile sensation of movements and become aware of the emotional reactions that arise.

A variety of practices and games are used to help children become more aware of themselves and of other peoples experience, observing with an open, curious, non-judgmental mind. Some games help lift one’s mood and view life more positively. For example, the ‘Thanks for Three Things’ game involves noticing when you are feeling sad, acknowledging it, and then immediately giving thanks for three things. These types of contemplations have significant emotional and health benefits.‘Friendly Wishes’  help children cultivate kindness and compassion. Opportunities for friendly wishes emerge in every aspect of life and can be done through thoughts, art, acting, and singing.
